Personal Project Image Bank -

Image Bank -

(Gordon Parks)

This image is the suggested photographer from the exam, Gordon Parks, who is a connected images photographer who documents various subjects within series'. The above photograph is part of the civil rights series captured predominantly in 1960s America.

This image was chosen for its poignant subject matter and in respect of the fact that it condiments real life events instead of focusing on the fictional to tell the stories of real people and real world situations.

As a result, the above photograph will help to direct my project in relation to the idea of depicting real life, specifically my reality, through photographic documentary as a diary or scrapbook of important events in my life. Furthermore, the use of black and white, as this is what was available at the time photographically is an editing technique that I could employ as a stylistic element within some of my series'.

(Gordon Parks)

The above photograph is another work from the suggested photographer Gordon Parks. Although, this image is in colour unlike the one before it despite the fact that it continues to depict the same subject matter of civil rights.

Once again, I chose this photograph for its highly significant subject matter and how it beautifully uses colour film to capture a beautiful lowly saturated instant style.

This image will contribute to my project mostly through its use of film and as such the resulting colour aesthetic. I will be using both an instant Polaroid camera and disposable camera which both use film unlike my DSLR or other digital cameras that will be used within the project.

(Guerrilla Girls)

The above photographic conceptual art is created by the feminist artists the Guerrilla Girls who introduce important messages into art that address issues regarding gender and other causes for inequality in the current world state.

This image was chosen as it demonstrates the compositional layout of most photoessays that utilise the idea of connected images.

It will mostly influence my project in the layout of final images once each shoot is completed as I will be employing multiple photographs, polaroids and collected items such as leaflets and train tickets.

(Dash Snow)

The above photographic installation is the work of the late Dash Snow who is known for his rebellious documentary photographs captured on an instant polaroid camera depicting "nights he wouldn't otherwise remember".

This image was selected for its stylistic elements that reflect that of a photographic installation in an art gallery but is also reminiscent of photoessays.

Moreover, this could influence my project in its depiction of youth subculture. As a 17 year old youth is a large section of my life although not to the extremes of the work seen in Snow's images. Furthermore, the layout of the photographs are insertional in their simplicity and also that they are a corpus of polaroids.

(Unknown)

This is a photoessay from an unknown photographer who implements the stylistic choices seen in many photoessays; for instance the black and white images, varied composition and almost photo joiner layout.

This is influential in its layout and use of black and white which is something that I could consider. Although, as I wish for each shoot to appear cohesive with the next it may appear odd if some are fully saturated and others are not.

As such, what can be taken from this is the black and white filter used on the photographs and also the final composition of the multiple images.

(Minor White)

This is an album from the American photographer, theoretician and educator Minor White whose interests are based upon the spiritual and intellectual philosophies.

This series of images were chosen mainly due to their layout which is almost like a photo book or scrapbook which is my desired aesthetic. Moreover, the careful use of lighting is another skill that is important in the work of White. His work has many connotations such as sexuality as Minor White was a closeted gay man for most of his life; as such, his work is almost reflective and like a diary which is part of my idea for my project.

Therefore, the idea of reflecting yourself within your work is important and something that will be likely seen in my future photoshoots due to their depiction of elements within my life composed like a scrapbook.

(Herman Krieger)

This image is a photoessay entitled 'West 6th Avenue' by Herman Kreiger is a narrative of multiple photographs compiled into one based upon their subject matter in relation to location.

This image is influential as it has a documentary aspect and style which is a photographic technique that I have used before and enjoyed. The photographic compilation itself is of a nice layout and is cohesive in its background colour and filter used; this composition is unanimously employed throughout all of Krieger's photoessays and displays an extreme conformity to my chosen exam subject connected images.

The above image will influence my project in its constant style replicated throughout all of Krieger's life works. However, I may find it difficult to incorporate experimentation into my project if al work together as one stylised cohesive body of work.

(Robert Mapplethorpe)

This photographic compilation is the work of the controversial photographer who often depicted nudity, sexuality and homoeroticity within his works.

This series was chosen for its layout that is a culmination of a photo album and photographic art book that deals with interesting portraiture.

The image seen above is influential to my project in its about and clear use of colour to create a specific aesthetic that could be carried across multiple shoots.

(Gosha Rubchinskiy)

The above image is from the Russian photographer and fashion designer Gosha Rubchinskiy who completed a series that focused on youth.

This image seen above is of interest to me through its deliberate choice of using a black and white filter but also its depiction of youth within the stereotypical role of rebellion and nihilism.

This is vital to my project as I am a teenager myself and as I am depicting elements of my life some shoots may be focused around the themes of youth.

(Gosha Rubchinskiy)

Once again this is the work of the Russian photographer whose series depicts youth subculture in Russia.

This depicts the nihilism of youth and their self-destructive tendencies and how youth are often seen in mediums such as photography. Moreover, it is influential in its colourisation that is almost faded and lowly saturated like an instant polaroid image.

This is influential to my project in the depiction of youth and its colourisation.

(Charles Jeffrey)

The above polaroid photograph is captured by the fashion designer who is renowned for his work as a ringleader of "next generation club kids". His work is often depicting an artificial tribe of friends such as artists, musicians, drag queens and poets.

This image was chosen for its simplistic composition and use of lowly saturated colours which are synonymous with instant photography. I also chose this photographer as they use the same smaller polaroid film that my camera takes and that I plan to use in my project.

This will influence my project in reference to use of colour, the themes of youth and the specific tools used to capture the photographs.

(Wolfgang Tillman)

The image seen above is the work of the German Turner prize winning fine-art photographer who captures images that depict his surroundings.

This work was chosen for its creative interpretation of portraiture and use of colour, his work, in that respect, is similar to Alec Soth.

This will influence my project in the use of colour and the innovative interpretation of how portraiture can be used. Whilst I will not be explicitly focusing on portraiture I will inevitably complete some within my projects.

(Collier Schorr)

The above photograph is from the series titled 'Girlfriends' from the fashion photographer Schorr who often studies realism alongside youth.

The reason I chose this image is because the majority of Schorr's work is focused on gender and identity and how it is represented specifically in relation to youth.

This will influence my project in its observation of youth culture and the more positive connotations of such.

(David Shama)

This image is one from the series entitled '7eleven' by David Shama and was created for Dazed magazine and tells a story about a love triangle.

I chose this photographic series by Shama as the themes and aesthetic are influential in that his work displays youth culture in a fun way.

This is influential to me in my depiction of youth rebellion and fun hand in hand which I intend on implementing in at least one photographic shoot.

(Nan Goldin)

This image is from the early photographic work of Goldin alongside her friend David Armstrong before they became famous photographers. They were at art school together in Boston and often captured photographs of the same subjects but in varied methods of photography and aesthetics.

I chose this image as it utilises both the technique of polaroids and themes of youth with an aesthetic that inspires my own. The other images from the series also depict a timeless quality in the same way that this image does due to the nostalgic reinterpretation of portraiture through the polaroid medium used by modern photographers today.

This will influence my project in respect of the technique and themes of the image; I, as a teenager, will depict peers a part of my project which means the focus will sometimes be around youth as an artificial tribe as theorised by Anne Gould.

(Julius D High)

This image is from the polaroid series, opposed to the 35mm visuals, called 'What Is Love?' in which people all over America were photographed and then asked the question "What is your personal interpretation of love?" and the responses were documented by D High.

This image was chosen as it demonstrated the simplicity of the technique yet how effective it can be to combine elements of text with a photograph of the person to create a more informed portrait of the person not just in respect of their appearance but also in their personality and beliefs.

This image will influence my project in that for some photographic shoots I intend to add elements of text, quotes from the day or other relevant information, to create a scrapbook that is almost like a diary of things that happen in my life.

(Richard Kern)

Kern's photography often depicts the female form and gives females backstories that display them as more than a body but people with a past and present.

This photo was chosen for its utilisation of the polaroid technique but also because its imagery depicts femininity in a powerful manner despite the conformity of stereotypes such as the pink background.

This image will serve as inspiration to my project solely in respect of its technique of polaroid photography as the imagery present in his work is not as similar to my aesthetic as prior work outline above.

(Ansel Adams)

Ansel Adams is a famous landscape photographer who was known for his conservationist photographs and some of those images deviated from the standard black and white photography and were instead in the form of colour polaroids.

This particular outcome was chosen for its composition of multiple images being combined in a way that almost mimics a photo album.

This will influence my project in that I could explore the locations and settings of my photoshoots through polaroid landscape photography alongside focusing on portraits and such.

(Andrei Tarkovsky)

Tarkovsky was a director and cinematographer who used photography as a medium to capture the world around him. The polaroids came at a time in his life, between 1979 and 1984, in his later years before his death from cancer.

I chose these images as they display a cinematic style within the photographic medium. It was said about Tarkovsky's "vignettes from a personal world... we are left spellbound by a quiet and captivating insight into the world of a man who rendered dreams reality".

As such, it is the cinematic experience that I wish to take from Tarkovsky's work; whilst his ideas are more dark I will attempt to create a coming of age youth cinematic experience through my work specifically focusing on my polaroids.

(Andrei Tarkovsky)

Once more, this is the work of the film maker Tarkovsky and were from his polaroid photography period.

This series of connected images was chosen as it depicts a similar photographic installation to the works of Dash Snow who is a huge influence on my project. Moreover, the polaroids seen above tell a narrative cinematic story.

As a result, this will influence my project in that I want to tell a story, even if only a document of a night or event, through my photographs.

(Jamie Livingston)

Livingston's photographic project was to take one polaroid everyday of his life from 1979 to 1997 when he passed away from cancer.

The images are a document of his life and of the journey that he has been on and that is why these images are so powerful.

What I will take form this project is the medium of polaroid photography but even more importantly the idea of having purpose within an image; whilst my photographs will, hopefully, not document sad aspects of my life I want the photoshoots to form a documentary photo book of events in my life.

(Ashley Armitage)

The above image is by the feminist art producer who in her own words "focuses on the female and femme experience, and reclaiming our representations through a female gaze".

This image was chosen for its definite aesthetic and careful considerate composition; the use of images within the main image is a clever use of encouraging a journey through the final outcome.

What I take from this image is the aesthetic choices and the importance of considering composition.

(Ashley Armitage)

Once again, the above image is the photographic work of Armitage who is known for her female femme celebrating photography.

This image was chosen as it again reinforced the outlined aesthetic of Armitage's portfolio.

This will influence me in the idea of creating a connected image series that can be displayed as a photographic installation like seen above.

(Phillip Pessar)

Pessar captured polaroids and other photographs around his home in south Florida, Miami. The purpose was not to create art but instead to document the rapidly changing landscape of his surroundings.

Pessar originally began by capturing images with a disposable camera before upgrading to a polaroid that he purchased from the store Urban Outfitters and later buying and using polaroid cameras from thrift stores. Additionally, Pessar prefers to document the "retro, old or ugly" scenery.

This image is influential to my project in that I plan on utilising various mediums of photography from disposable film, polaroids or digital cameras. Also, I prefer for photography to either have a narrative or to document something. As such, I intend for my work to document aspects of my life.

(Peter Pawlowski)

This photograph is a polaroid that documents a gig by Pawlowski.

This image was chosen as part of my image bank as it uses the technique of polaroid photography and also documents a similar situation that is an important aspect of my life. I personally enjoy live music and gigs and therefore it may be present in my project.

This is influential to my project in the themes of the photography are similar to my personal interests and as my idea is to create a scrapbook like document of my life it is likely that music will be significant it.

(Stefanie Schneider)

Schneider is a photographer who captures polaroid photographs on film and develops them allowing for chemical mutations to occur and create meaning within the work. Her work has been used by music artists such as Red Hot Chili Peppers and such.

This piece was chosen as it documents the accidents that occur within the unpredictable nature of photography, specifically polaroid or other film cameras, and how it can be used to create an aesthetic and purpose.

As such, I could utilise polaroid photographs that have chemically gone wrong and yet still include them in my photoshoots as they are still a document of what had occurred on each day and event.

(Unknown)

This photographic installation is a documentary of flowers in the medium of polaroid photography.

This photograph was chosen as it is within the medium of polaroid photography but also because the images are connected in their subject matter and the composition is like that of a visual diary or scrapbook with the date in the top third of the compositional grid.

This will influence my project in that I plan on using a combination of polaroids and other photographic mediums such as disposable film and digital images and combining them as a scrapbook documentation of what is important in my life; to do this I may include elements of text alongside the images.

(Unknown)

This polaroid connected image series is a study of similar subjects and related colour schemes.

This image was chosen as it displays a clear understanding of idea and theme and sticks to it throughout all images.

This will influence my project in that it will encourage me to stick to an aesthetic choice for a sustained period whilst exploring themes and such without changing my style in an eclectic manner.

(Walker Evans)

This connected image series is from the American documentary photographer Walker Evans who documents the American scene from the 1920s to the 1970s. His work depicts the colloquial and less glamorous aspects of society.

I chose this image as it chooses to focus on the reality of situations instead of a constructed idea. Aditonally, the aesthetic matches throughout the connected images.

As such, this will influence my project in that my plan is to document real events in my life in a scrapbook style.

(David Hockney)

This image is from the photo joiner technique employed by Hockney during his photographic period before he again returned to art after finding photography too limiting. It originated from a photographic composition of multiple polaroids in Hockney's apartment when preparing for a painting.

I chose this image as it is an example of connected images and employs the medium of polaroids in an inventive way that coveys movement and reality in a still shot.

What I take from this is the idea that the medium of photography can be extended beyond what it is usually used for.

(Collier Schorr)

This is the work of fashion photographer Schorr who often depicted youthful fantasies through the medium of photography. This image is a collage from the series "Jens F".

I chose this image as it is an interesting exploration of photographic installations and how an amateur looking aesthetic can be used in a conceptual art way to create an intriguing photographic idea.

What I take from this particular image is the layering techniques and that amatory appearing skills can be used to evoke a sense of nostalgia and similarity in audiences perspectives and as such can have specific effects on audiences and create meanings. Therefore, I will aim to explore various techniques throughout my project whilst still maintaining a similar aesthetic throughout the shoots.
