(What is love?)
Connotation: This image conveys one persons interpretation of love when faced with the question that is the prompt for all D High's captions. The location is used to tell a story about the person in that it is where the photographer found them and approached them. Moreover, the pink colour of the background is often symbolic of love which is the theme of the series.
Denotation: Each work within the "What is love?" series is a diptych of two polaroids with a caption beneath that focuses on the response to the question.
Context: This is from the "What is love?" series that has been a photographic journey across multiple American states and captures everyday people.
(What is love?)
Connotation: How everyone has a different interpretation of the meaning of love and it can be wither positive or negative. Once again, the red colour is a symbolic sign of love and sexuality and relationships which could have meant that the photograph was slightly posed.
Denotation: Every image within the "What is love?" series is a diptych of two photographs with a caption beneath that addresses the response to the question "What is your individual interoperation of love?".
Context: This series depicts ordinary people and their responses to the question which is also the title of the series.
(35mm Visuals)
Connotation: This is one of the photographs from the photographic film series. Occasionally, the photographer would ask his "What is love?" prompt which was usually used only in the polaroid series. Whilst the subject did not answer the question, the subject is within a vulnerable and intimate way in the photograph and could be answering the question through their pose which could mean the ability to be completely open is the meaning of love.
Denotation: This image shows an individual subject in the central area of the landscape orientated film photograph. The colours are muted as is often seen with film cameras.
Context: This image is one of the film photographs opposed to the polaroid series.
(35mm Visuals / What is love?)
Connotation: The subject is central to the photograph and the bubbles themselves which form a large section of the background could be implicit of the feeling often associated with love such as butterflies.
Denotation: There is one subject in the central rule of thirds composition of the film photograph. There is also a caption beneath the image which conveys the subjects response to the question that serves as the title for the polaroid series.
Context: This photograph is one from the 35mm film series that also works in cohesion with Julius D High's other works focusing on love and its meaning.
Influence -
These photographic images have influenced my project in that I have used polaroids and other mediums such as disposable film cameras in my first five photoshoots. I also implemented the diptych technique of composition in my 6th and 7th shoot.
Summary -
The image seen above shows how I was inspired by the work of Julius D High. The most obvious influence is seen in the composition and technique; there are two photographs that create a diptych whilst there is also a caption beneath relating to the subject. Whilst D High's was relating to their belief systems mine was keeping in theme of self-identity and studied the subjects' projected and implicit identities.
