David Shama:
(7 Eleven)
http://www.davidshama.com
Connotation: The connotations from this image and from the series as a whole appears to be an exploration of youth culture and the stereotypes of youth such as sexuality. The trio of subjects appear to be very close and almost as if they are in a polyamorous relationship or are simply best friends. They are depicted as going on a road trip that could be a metaphor for the journey and missing sense of belonging that youth face as they are neither a child nor an adult.
Denotation: The image seen above is medium close shot with three subjects in a landscape orientation with a simple colour scheme that mimics the aesthetic of disposable film cameras.
Context: The photograph was captured by Shama who describes himself as a "documentary photographer" who is all about "storytelling" and creates a narrative for his characters but then allows them to act almost freely for a more realistic aesthetic. To achieve this, Shama employed the female lead and asked her to choose her companions in which she chose her boyfriend and best friend; he said in an interview that "I found them through her as I wanted people as close as possible to her. I wanted to feel how intimate they are and their very real friendship". Additionally, Shama has said that inspiration was derived from 90s movies that have a youth coming of age atmosphere and also depicts the American Dream.

(Devil's Lake WI)
http://www.davidshama.com
Connotation: Devil's Lake is a tourist attraction in Wisconsin, America. The series has a singular subject but the photographer, Shama, appears to make himself part of the narrative in that the model makes a direct address to the camera, and that the photographs and their locations appear quite intimate. Moreover, the aesthetic appears to match the style of tourist photographs captured by one person of another which again reinforces the idea of inferred intimacy between the camera and model. Furthermore, the American flag is a prominent feature in the photograph and emphasises the location.
Denotation: This image is a medium close up portrait documentary shot that depicts a single subject in the central third of the compositional grid. The style appears to mimic amateur photography in that it appears like tourist photographs that people take of friends and family. This again conforms to the intimate nature of Shama's personal projects opposed to commercial fashion shoots for magazines.
Context: Devil's Lake is a tourist attraction in Wisconsin, America and was captured by the narrative creating faux documentary photographer David Shama. The series depicts an on the road journey with other images in the series being road signs and roadside stops such as restaurants. Once again, Shama often focuses on ideas revolving around the American Dream and a significant part of this ideology is capitalism and tourism which is seen in this series. The presence of the American flag, despite the explicit reason as it is in America, could be relating to the fact that Shama made America his home as he felt it was diverse enough a base for his photography.

Julius D High:
(What is love?)
http://www.lovethepathwayoftheheart.com
Connotation: Love is a concept that gives a name to a chemistry reaction and as it is a social construct it means that people interpret it differently as a result of their social upbringing. The people photographed are not models but everyday people and as such their interpretations are made more relatable to audiences.
Denotation: The medium of photography is that of a polaroid and the two subjects are placed centrally within the portrait composition of the two photographs. This image is somewhat deviant from the usual layout of D High's work in that it featured two portraits and two responses to the question when a duo of polaroids usually tells the story of one person as seen in the other example below.
Context: D High travels around America and captures photographs of random people almost as a staged documentary or diary before asking them a question relating to his theme of love. The question is the same for all of his subjects and it is the responses that are deemed important; the question is "What is your personal interpretation of love?". This diptych is from Atlanta in Georgia.
(What is love?)
http://www.lovethepathwayoftheheart.com
Connotation: Love is interpreted differently and this subject made a statement that identifies more so with a varied idea of love not featured within most other responses. The connotations could be that we are all different and as such our perceptions of love are also different.
Denotation: There is one subject captured within a polaroid format and the standard form of featuring the name, age and response to the question beneath the image as a visual documentary diary.
Context: Julius D High tours American states and photographs a visual diary of people he meets before asking them the question "What is your personal interpretation of love?". This image was captured in Atlanta, Georgia.
Collier Schorr:
(South of no North, Girlfriends Bathing)
http://collierschorr.com
Connotation: The term girlfriends is not clarified to mean relationship or friendship yet the image appears to link more closely to a romantic relationship opposed to platonic. The two girls who serve as the subjects appear to be relaxing in a meadow where romance is often inferred in novels and films and such. The title of the photograph is "Girlfriends Bathing" which could directly mean sunbathing or such whilst it could also instead infer bathing and baring all to one another through their love.
Denotation: This photograph is of a landscape orientation with two subjects that intersect the compositional rule of three grid. The angular shapes of the body and the soft lines created by light and shadows allow the audience to explore the image gradually as if also in the meadow themselves.
Context: Collier Schorr is a feminist photographer who often focuses on ideas such as gender and identity and this is evidenced in this series titled "Girlfriends Bathing" as they could either be exemplifying lesser depicted sexualities within media or to show the unity between women in society.
(Girlfriends Bathing)
http://collierschorr.com
Connotation: As Schorr herself is a feminist who often studies gender and identity it could be inferred the the subject on the right is wearing a binder and is possible non-binary but identifies more so with felinity hence the name "Girlfriends Bathing".
Denotation: The two subjects are central within the landscape composition and making a direct address to the audience through their eye contact. The subjects are in underwear which could be again making reference to gender.
Context: Schorr is a known feminist and her images often depict ideas relating to gender and identity as is strongly evidenced in the images seen above which were chosen due to their meanings.
Ashley Armitage:
(Class of '93)
http://www.asharmitage.com
Connotation: The inference of this is that the three subjects are best friends and are living a shared youth with those closest to them. They are influenced strongly by one another as is connoted through their clothing in that the colours are coordinated. They appear to have a strong bond of friendship; they are in a bathroom which is often a pace of unity between females due to sharing conversations, mirrors and, as is depicted in another image from the series, even sanitary products.
Denotation: There are three subjects within the central sections of the landscape orientated image depicting a coming of age tale between three friends. The colours are quite muted and coordinated in both the background and clothing of the subjects. The photograph is an example of staged documentary in which the photographer captures the subjects and makes small adjustments and poses to achieve the desired outcome.
Context: The subjects within the "Class of '93" are friends of the photographer and her friends, at the time, were high-school seniors in Seattle. The series was intended to document everyday school life and also the everyday situations associated with being a female. The series is a document of their last year together before they left for college and serves almost as a photo album of their memories.
(The Girls Room)
http://www.asharmitage.com
Connotation: This image and series appears to be about body image through the depiction of females in various levels of undress but deliberately not from a sexual standpoint. The title is "The Girls Room" which infers a state of privacy away from critical perspectives and instead creates an accepting atmosphere in which females can feel comfortable as there is not a place in public where this is the case. The intimate pink lighting is usually a femme symbolic sign but also infers a sense of warmth and security.
Denotation: There are two female subjects, one of which is in focus in the foreground whilst the other is blurred in the background due to the F/Stop value. There is a pastel pink lighting which is casting some shadows across the subjects. The setting appears to be a bedroom and both subject are laying on a bed holding their phones as props.
Context: Ashley Armitage is a femisist photographer and short filmmaker who often chooses to focus on her perspective on the transition from girlhood to womanhood. Her work is "Female-centric" and depicts a "coming of age" story much like the works of other female empowerment photographers. Armitage's work is a platform for equality and uses her photography as a tool to challenge male-dominated mass media. Armitage has said herself that "I want to show girls as real people and not just as cookie-cutter stereotypes", she has also said in interviews that "This is why the female gaze or any minority gaze is important. I'm not trying to speak in place of all women, because I don't have that right. I'm just trying to show my personal perspective of what being a girl is like".
Jamie Livingston:
(08-20-97)
http://photooftheday.hughcrawford.com
Connotation: The meanings of this image are less implicit than most other photographs as the series is a documentary of one mans life, journey and death. This image is one of the later ones in which the photographer is in the hospital bed. The connotations, however, could be about the positivity of life even in the face of death. The flowers are a symbol of life, the sunflower itself being a symbol of longevity whilst the red rose is a symbol of courage. As such each is used to bring about an idea of hope to beat the cancer that the photographer was facing.
Denotation: There are three subjects, the one in the central column of the rule of thirds grid is the photographer himself whilst the other two appear to be hospital workers or friends or family of the main subject.
Context: Livingston captured a polaroid everyday of his life for 18 years until his death in 1997. His photographs depict his friends and family mostly but also the journey of his life and later his death. This image is captured close to the death of the photographer and as such depicts the final chapters of his documentary series. The website was later composed in respect of Jamie Livingston as a tribute to show his strength even in the face of death.
(10-07-97)
http://photooftheday.hughcrawford.com
Connotation: This image depicts a wedding union between the photographer and his fiancé. The two main subjects are not addressing the camera but are instead in their own world. The female subjects eyeline is directed towards her husband whilst he appear to be looking towards someone who may be conducting the ceremony. The white is a symbol often seen in western marriages to represent purity but white can also symbolise things such as heaven, new beginnings, possibility and protection.
Denotation: There are two subject off centre with the brightness being exaggerated by the backlighting to the subjects. The two subjects are getting married hence the clothing and guest in the background.
Context: This image was captured on 06-10-1997 and depicts the wedding that occurred in Jamie Livingstons lifetime when shortly 19 days later he died from cancer on 25-10-19997. The image is one of the last in an 18 year project and provides a positive yet melancholy interpretation of life and the journey of it.
Dash Snow:

Dash Snow:

No known website
Connotation: The connotations of this image include the recklessness and nihilism of youth. The bloody knees are the main feature of the image and the subject remains anonymous; instead they become a figurehead for all youth as this was a theme strongly featured within Snow's work. The lighting is in the foreground with the background being dark which could infer the darker lifestyle of the subject as Dash Snow was well known for his deviant behaviour. In fact his work was said to be a document for the nights that he will probably not have remembered based around a rebellious youth culture.
Denotation: There is an anonymous subject with the main focus being a close up shot of the bloody knees of a subject who is placed within the central third of the polaroid photograph.
Context: Dash Snow lead a hedonistic and nihilistic life involving sex, drugs and various other pursuits. The photograph above is one of many that depicts bodily fluids such as blood. Blood is often featured to remind the viewer of their mortality and also of the fact that things are ephemeral and not durable and everlasting; Dash Snow himself captured things that moved too quickly and he died aged 27 from a drug overdose after living a fast paced life; "life is full of trivial things, as much as it is made up of beauty, and ugliness".
(Hell, 2005)
No known website
Connotation: This image is one of Snow's iconic polaroids that appears to convey a political and social interpretation of the American lifestyle and a broken ideology that is the American dream. The dark background lit only by the glow of neon signs is a question of society and its systems; this is reinforced through Snow's dislike for certain technologies such as the internet.
Denotation: This photograph depicts a Shell garage in which one of the letters on the illuminated signs has fallen off. Whilst this setting was accidental it was given meaning by Snow's decision to photograph it.
Context: This image was captured in 2005 just four years prior to his death from drug overdose. The works of Snow were said to capture a "Whitmanesque imperative". Moreover, his work is rather implicit in its meanings and a comment made by Diane Arbus links well in that "A photograph is a secret about a secret. The more it tells you the less you know". Much alike in interpretations Snow himself said in 2008, one year prior to his death, "Sometimes the story is more important than the visuals".

Gordon Parks:
(Ondria Tanner and Her Grandmother Window-Shopping, Mobile, Alabama, 1956, Segregation Series)
http://www.gordonparksfoundation.org
Connotation: The connotations of this image is related to racism in society, specifically within the temporal context of 1956, in which there are black subjects surrounded by white mannequins. The glass window also could serve as a metaphor for the segregation and barriers placed between various races and the inequality faced by ethnic minorities in society.
Denotation: The compositional framing is within a square mostly likely due to the use of a film camera with the subjects of the photograph framed by the other aspects of the image. This image is a perfect example of a documentary photograph as it depicts the social situation of the time.
Context: 1956 America was a time of racial segregation which was still evident yet the works of politicians and people such as Martin Luther King Jr and Gordon Parks had lead to some changes in law. One year prior to this image Rosa Parks' actions had lead to the civil rights movements important movement known as the Montgomery Bus Boycott in Alabama. The movement lead to some changes in racial segregation law being changed in 1956 due to it being considered unconstitutional. Despite this, the civil rights movement and documentation are extremely important as racial prejudices still strongly existed contextually.

(Untitled, Watts, California, 1967, Civil Rights Series)
http://www.gordonparksfoundation.org
Connotation: This image is mostly explicit in its meanings but it depicts a united front of ethnic minorities, specifically African Americans, cheering in support of the extreme activist Malcom X.
Denotation: There are three subjects within the photograph, two are within the left third of the compositional grid whilst the third is in the centre and right which encourages the viewer to look at each subject individually but also as a collective. The photograph is in the portrait orientation and is black and white due to the camera used.
Context: Malcom X was an activist who was known for his rather extreme beliefs in which he encouraged teachings of ideas that changes should be made "by any means necessary" and this resonated with many audiences as prior to this little changes had impacted in a beneficial manner. Despite this image featuring in the "Civil Rights Series" Malcom X himself held beliefs that Martin Luther King Jr and other such civil rights activist were still acting in a way that was beneficial to white power.

(Holly Street, Burlington Northern Railway, Junction City Junction)
http://members.efn.org/~hkrieger/
Connotation: This photoessay seems instead to focus on people more so than the location as a subject is seen within all photographs. Therefore, this series appears to be a documentary and also show the unity between people due to their shared situations; the combining of the images into a photoessay creates a sense of unison between the subjects.
Denotation: This photoessay is a culmination of many images which are variant from Krieger's other works in that the photographs are captioned by the names of the subjects. The photographs are in black and white which is a stylistic choice implemented in the majority of Herman Krieger's work.
Context: Junction City is a place located 15 miles north of Eugene, Oregon and was named so because of the railway junction that was intended to be built there.

Nan Goldin:
(Nan and Brian in Bed, NYC, 1983)
No known website
Connotation: This image depicts a couple that appear toxic to one another. The female subject, Nan Goldin, is looking towards her partner from a low position as if she admires but is also scared of him whilst he looks away from her almost as forgetting her presence. The lighting is warm and suggests intimacy but also creates the sense of danger. Moreover, the cigarette appears to be a metaphor for the nihilism featured within most of Goldin's work.
Denotation: There are two subjects within the photograph are within the framing of a landscape orientation and yet still conform to the compositional rule of three grid with the male in the cross-section of the left third whilst the other subject is within the right third and is further into the background as if she is an after thought to the main subject. The image is in colour and seems significant that one subject is in the light whilst the other is in the shadow of the other. The portrait itself is intimate in that it is depicting a scene that is usually private.
Context: Nan Goldin featured this image within her series titles "The Ballad of Sexual Dependency" which is a series that depicted a large amount of intimate moments between couples that featured the positives and negatives of relationships. To further this, Nan Golding had said about her work that "It can't only be the dark moments. There's a lot of light there too." which is evidenced in this photograph.

(Twisting at my Birthday Party, NYC, 1980)

Connotation: This photograph is one of the many that exemplifies a documentary candid style image which tells a narrative within a frame. The photograph appears to capture a wild moment in time with partying and smoking and drugs and other such behaviours that Goldin was known for. The variety of subjects appears to represent the eclectic life of Golding and that each subject helps to represent her as much as they do themselves.
Denotation: This image is a colour landscape orientation photograph of multiple subjects. The use of depth of field and the compositional grid are used effectively. The audience is encouraged to look at each subject due to the layout.
Context: Nan Goldin has said that her work isn't a documentary as such as she "was living for the moment, not documenting for the future".
Jenoris Caba:
(self.)
http://www.jenoriscaba.com
Connotation: This image is within the series entitled "self." and depicts the surface of a bedside cabinet in the photographers bedroom. The photograph hints towards aspects of their life through the banal everyday objects that compose them. Their needs such as glasses, their habits such as perfume and their hobbies such as sudoku. The colourisation is pink which creates an intimate atmosphere which is relevant as the photograph depicts items that would not usually be seen except by the photographer themselves.
Denotation: The photograph is in landscape orientation and does not necessarily conform to any compositional techniques as it is a documentary portrait of the photographer which is not posed for aesthetic but captured instead to provide an insight into self. The colorisation appears to have been emphasised possibly during the development process as the majority of images taken by Caba are taken on film cameras and polaroids.
Context: This image is one of many within a series titled "self." which documents the life of the photographer which would otherwise be kept private. The photographs do not feature an portraits of the photographer herself but instead use objects, situations and experiences to tell the story of the photographer.
(self.)
http://www.jenoriscaba.com
Connotation: This image depicts a gig scene which is blurred possibly to imply the state of the photographer at the time or possibly instead to exaggerate motion and movement. The blur technique is often used in cinematography to imply a state of drunkness or such. However, as there is most likely live music playing it could also show the photographers movements of dance. The faces of the subjects are blurred which could mean they are not as significant to the photograph when contrasted to the experience as a whole or it could be that the photographer is so familiar with them that there image does not need to be captured accurately to have a memory of them and the night.
Denotation: This image is also in landscape orientation but is instead depicting multiple subjects in a lively scenario which, either accidentally or aesthetically, is blurred by possibly using a longer exposure time.
Context: This image like the one prior to it is from the series "self." which documents aspects of the photographer life and things that are part of their routines of lifestyle.
